“아는 게 많을수록 외국어 학습에 좋을까?” -모음 음소 목록의 크기와 새로운 모음의 지각을 중심으로-

이 연구에서는 새로운 음소 지각에 대한 이중언어의 이점이 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 단일어 화자들을 대상으로 한 기존 연구들에서는 모국어의 모음 목록 크기가 큰 것이 작은 것보다 이음소 변별에 유리한 것으로 나타났다. 그렇다면, 두 언어의 지식을 갖는-즉, 모음 목록의 크기가클 수밖에 없는-이중언어 화자의 경우는 단일어 화자의 경우보다 이음소지각에 있어 당연히 유리한 것일까? 이를 알아보고자 모로코 아랍어 단일어 화자와 모로코 아랍어와 프랑스어의 이중언어 화자의 한국어 단모음에대한 변별력을 측정하였다. 그 결과, 이중언어 화자의 경우가 단일어 화자보다 한국어 모음 변별력이 대체로 높았다. 이러한 결과는 단일어 화자와이중언어 화자의 이음소 지각 과정이 다를 수 있으며, 나아가 외국어 음소 습득에서 이중언어 화자가 더 유리할 수 있다는 가능성을 시사한다.
Abstract
The study aims at exploring if there are any benefits of bilingualism on the perception of novel speech contrasts. Previous research studies reported that the vowel inventory size of the L1 and sensitivity to novel vowels are correlated. We assumed that this holds true also for bilingual speakers, whose knowledge of the L1 and L2 makes their vowel inventory larger than their monolingual counterparts. To examine this, we compared the discriminability of Korean monophthongs by two groups of speakers: monolingual Moroccan Arabic speakers and bilingual speakers of Moroccan Arabic and French. As was assumed, for the most part (with the exception of /a-ʌ/ and /u-o/) bilingual speakers outperformed monolinguals in discriminating nonnative Korean vowels. Thus, it was suggested that relative to knowledge of the L1 alone, a larger vowel inventory made of the combined knowledge of the L1 and the L2 enhances discriminability of novel vowel contrasts.
