초록
Although morphological awareness is an important type of metalinguistic awareness in reading comprehension, the morphophonemic features of English morphology complicate the measurement of purely morphological features by using reading comprehension tasks on tests. In response, this study investigated the relationship between morphological and phonological awareness and how that relationship interacts with vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. A sample of 112 Korean-speaking tenth-grade high school students took tests examining three types of morphological awareness (i.e., compounding awareness, inflectional awareness, and derivational awareness), two types of phonological awareness (i.e., rhyme awareness and phonemic awareness), vocabulary knowledge, and reading comprehension. Analysis using structural equation modeling revealed that morphological awareness made a unique, direct contribution to reading comprehension as well as an indirect contribution via vocabulary knowledge. An additional analysis revealing only a partial mediation between morphological awareness and reading comprehension further stressed the importance of vocabulary knowledge in supporting morphological awareness in reading comprehension. This article discusses implications for teaching English-language morphological awareness and vocabulary knowledge in Korean context.
