Abstract
This study analyzes the topics and cultural elements in the introductory illustrations and reading texts of 10 first-year middle school English textbooks developed under the 2022 revised English curriculum. As English serves as a global lingua franca, English education in Korea seeks to enhance both communicative competence and intercultural understanding. Given the crucial role of textbooks in language learning, a balanced representation of topics and cultural content is essential to foster engagement, motivation, and multicultural sensitivity. Using 33 topics across nine categories, the study examined representations of race, gender, cultural backgrounds, and cultural types. Results showed an uneven distribution of topics, indicating the need for greater balance. Gender representation was relatively equitable, showing improvement from previous textbooks, whereas racial representation remained skewed, with Asians and Whites appearing more frequently than Black individuals. Cultural backgrounds were largely universal, with limited diversity, and behavioral and spiritual cultures were more prevalent than material culture. These findings highlight the importance of integrating a wider range of balanced topics and diverse cultural elements into English textbooks to support learner engagement and the development of intercultural communicative competence.
