초록

In this study, the usage of “Toiu(という)” is examined, focusing on expressions such as “phrases (equivalent phrases)+という+[ことにする/ことになる]”, and “sentence (equivalent phrases)+という+[ので/のに]”. When “ことにする” connects to a statement or clause, “という” is optional when the previous sentence form is a verb ending. Here, “という” plays a role as a link, but is also used to highlight the previous sentence based on the nuances of the citation and hearing, or for the purpose of demarcating the range of the long preceding sentence. Other than this, “という” is absolutely necessary between the previous sentence and “ことにする”, because it does not only serve as a connecting element, but also emphasizes the previous sentence based on the basic usage of citation. It also indicates the nuance. Except when the previous sentence has a ル-form, inserting “という” in any type of sentence makes it possible to connect with “ことになる”. The “という” between the previous sentence and ‘ことになる’ that connects behind it acts as a link, so it cannot be directly quoted, but the previous sentence stands out because it connects back and forth with such a nuance at its basis. In addition, if the previous sentence is an utterance sentence, “という” also binds and limits the range of the long previous sentence. Since “という” in front of “ので”, which is a connection postposition of the cause and reason, is basically used as a meaning of quotation, the meaning of the statement changes depending on the presence of “という”. However, if the speaker already knows the previous sentence or if the cause-and-effect relationship is clear enough, the presence of “という” does not significantly affect the meaning of the sentence. Still, the use of “という” will highlight the preceding sentence. In addition, when trying to connect incompletely finished sentences by enumeration, etc., “ので” or “という” becomes absolutely necessary as a link, and in this case, “という” plays a role of limiting the long sentence. There are not many cases where 「という」 in front of 「のに」 is used as a quotation. In other words, most of the preceding sentences of “というのに” are already recognized by the speaker, and for this reason, it can also be substituted with “のに”. When “という” is used as a link like this, the unexpectedness of the previous sentence becomes more prominent.
