가와바타의 작품 『산소리』는 패전 이후의 시대상을 반영한 작품으로 전쟁의 상흔을 안고 살아가는 여성들이 많이 등장한다. 대표적으로 고전적 심미적 유형, 소박한 민중적 유형, 자존감이 결여된 패배주의 유형, 전후 출연한 데카당스 유형의 네 가지로 분류할 수 있다. 고전적 심미적 유형은 외형적으로는 우아하고 여린 매력을 발산하고 내면적으로는 순수하고 섬세한 감수성을 지닌 이상적 여성을 가리킨다. 이는 고전문학 속 ‘모노노아와레’의 이미지가 투영된 여성이다. 소박한 민중적 유형은 어머니의 모성, 아내로서의 내조자적 모습 등이 엿보이는 평범한 일상을 살아가는 여성이다. 자존감이 결여된 패배주의 유형은 현재의 지난한 삶을 뚜렷한 자아의식과 적극적인 개척정신 없이 무기력하고 자존감이 결여된 모습으로 살아가는 여성이다. 전후 출연한 데카당스 유형은 찰나적 향락과 퇴폐적 삶의 모습을 보이는 여성이다. 가와바타는 전후 ‘현실 세계의 반영’을 꾀하면서 현실에 뿌리를 둔 여성들을 그리고 전쟁의 상흔을 입은 사람들에게 재도약의 길을 모색할 것을 촉구하기도 하는 등 새로운 작품 세계를 시도한다. 하지만 여전히 ‘관념적인 미’가 아니면 모두가 ‘추(醜)라는 편향적인 사고로 작품 속 여성들을 그려내고 있다. 이는 현실 속에 혼재되어 조화를 이뤘을 때 비로소 완성되는 원숙한 아름다움을 기대하기 어렵다는 미의식의 한계를 드러내고 있다.
Abstract
Many female characters in Kawabata's "The Sound of Mountains" have been wounded by war. Women's images can be divided into four distinct categories: classical, popular, defeatist, and decadent. The classical type describes an ideal woman with an external elegance and delicacy, and an internal purity and delicacy. In classical literature, this is the type of woman associated with the concept of Monono Aware. The popular type is a woman who lives as a conscientious wife with maternal love. The defeatist type is a woman who lacks self-awareness and an active pioneering spirit and lives in a state of helplessness. The decadence type is a woman who enjoys fleeting pleasures and lives a decadent lifestyle. Kawabata tries to "reflect the real world" by depicting realistic women in his works and by offering consolation to those wounded by war. However, he continues to portray the women in his work with a prejudiced view that all women are ugly unless they possess an unrealistic level of beauty. This section reveals the limitations of aesthetic consciousness in that it is difficult to expect mature beauty that can only be achieved by combining beauty and ugliness.
