Abstract
Who is the gesaku writer referred to as "Ikku Ⅲ"? To distinguish between two possible individuals, I first compiled various titles and seals of the Ikku Ⅲ, namely Sante Shunba. Furthermore, aiming to construct a biography of the Ikku Ⅳ, namely Miura Ikku, this paper focuses on the ōraimono (educational texts) and investigative essays from which biographical information about him could be extracted. As a result, the following facts were clarified:First, due to Miura Ikku signing as "Ikku Ⅲ", there was previous literature that denied that Sante Shunba had formally inherited the name as the Ikku Ⅲ. Consequently, works such as "Shōsoku Ōrai Eshō" (Illustrated Guide to Letter Writing), which had been considered Sante Shunba's works, were in fact corrected to be Miura Ikku's works. Second, according to the preface of "Jippensha Zuihitsu" (Jippensha's essay), he was born as the eldest son of Miura Jatkai, who was a disciple of Seian Saiba. His name was Miura Tarozaemon Saneakira, and the family business was an antique shop located south of Kyobashi. It is believed that from 1852, he began referring to himself as the "Ikku Ⅲ, the Recluse of Kyobashi". Third, the use of “kyoba” (kyobashi) in the ○ of the rake as a popular signature is called Miura Ikku, while the use of three lines of dice in the ○ of the rake is called Shunba Ikku. I was the first to propose that the authors of "Ikku Ⅲ" could be identified by these signatures.
