Abstract
Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in C minor, No.32, Op.111 has been challenged by many revering pianists in the world since it has been published by the Schlesinger company in Paris. In two movements quite different qualities are found in the similar forms. One could conjecture that Beethoven might have sought to find the meeting point of two different worlds; one where he was suffering from painful reality, the other where he overcame and transcended human limitation and enjoyed eternal peace. Pianists will experience as many technical and musical challenges as he or she would confront many of them in life while playing from the Maestoso-Allegro con brio ed appassionato in the first movement to Arietta, the Second. In order to perform this piece successfully one should consider the difference between the pianos used by Beethoven and the modern pianos in decision of the range of dynamics, the length of the notes, and pedaling. Musical meaning should be considered before physical comfort in fingerings and handling of other difficult passage. And the last but not the least, one should possess inner maturity to understand and to express such huge and sublime qualities that are permeated in this simple two-movement work.
