‘말〔馬〕의 고장’ 제주와 金萬鎰 관련 역사자료 활용화의 첫 방안

제주의 정체성을 논의할 때, 빠뜨릴 수 없는 부분이 제주가 ‘말[馬]의 고장’이었다는 사실이라 하겠다. 조선시대 김만일의 경우는 ‘말의 고장’ 출신답게, 말 사육을 통해 국난극복에 크게 기여하는 한편, 제주사람으로 최상의 사회적 성취를 이루었고, 그 영향으로 자신의 가계도 제주도내의 최고 집안으로 발돋움했다. 현재도 김만일 및 그 가계 관련의 역사유적 유물이 도처에 남아 있다. 이들은 제주가 ‘말의 고장’이었음과 함께, 그에 힘입어 입지전적 사회적 성취를 이루었던 인간의 삶을 드러내는 표징물이라 아니 할 수 없다. 이에 김만일 관련 역사자료는 제주도 지정문화재로 지정고시하는 작업이 속히 이루어져야 한다고 본다. 이로써 ‘말의 고장’과 관련한 제주의 정체성을 입체적이며, 흥미진지하게 내외에 선양할 수 있는 문화자원을 확보함과 동시에, 보존에도 만전을 기할 수 있다. 또한 문화관광자원화의 길로 나아갈 수 있는 초석도 제공된다고 하겠다.
Abstract
Given that Jeju has been well known as the land of the horse, the identity of Jeju could not be fully discussed apart from it. A case of Kim, Manil, a native of Jeju during Chosun Dynasty, is thought to demonstrate that fact. As a native of Jeju, he contributed to overcoming several national crises by providing the government with a significant number of horses not only on the request from the government but also according to his own will. Those meritorious deeds helped him achieve the highest social status among his contemporaries from Jeju, making his family one of the greatest in Jeju. There still exist the historic remains related to him and his family at several sites. Those are the symbols that can illustrate the life of an individual who made a success based on the horses raised massively in Jeju. Accordingly, it is recommended that the historic remains be designated and then made public as Jeju?s Local Monument as soon as possible. By doing this, it will not only help secure and preserve cultural resources but also promote the uniqueness of Jeju as ?the land of the horse? in an amusing way, laying the foundation for cultural tourism.
