Abstract

This study examines how Munhwa kyoyuk (Cultural Education) devised by Munhwa yǒdae (Cultural Action) group influenced the making of Munhwayesul kyoyuk (Cultural Arts Education). Munhwayesul kyoyuk seems to have nothing to do with politics. In the making process of Munhwayesul kyoyuk, however, the political project of Munhwa yǒdae was working as an important influence. As this influence had up and down, the characteristics of Munhwayesul kyoyuk also came to have changes. Understanding such circumstances will lead to a useful instrument to see and build the identity of Munhwayesul kyoyuk. The term Munhwayesul kyoyuk was made by combining the two words, Munhwa kyoyuk (Cultural Education) coined by Munhwa yǒdae (Cultural Action) group and yesul kyoyuk (Arts Education). Inheriting the legacy of Minjung munhwa undong (People's Culture Movement), some scholars in Cultural Studies pursued a new cultural movement. They not only expressed their ideas through the journal Munhwa kwahak (Culture and Science) but also put their ideals to practice through Munhwa yǒdae (Cultural Action). One of the most important affairs the Munhwa yǒdae engaged in was realizing Munhwa kyoyuk (Cultural Education). Munhwa kyoyuk (Cultural Education) is a project that intended to change the whole system of education nationwide in order that students acquire the faculty to read and approach culture with critical thinking in the new way of education. This new education system was very ambitious and political as it was to guide the whole society or nation to a whole new direction of civilization. Munhwa kyoyuk (Cultural Education) was partially realized in the policy of Munhwayesul kyoyuk (Cultural Arts Education) under the Roh Moohyun After the Roh Moo-hyun government had ended its term, the influence of Munhwa yǒdae (Cultural Action) group and Munhwa kyoyuk (Cultural Education) retreated from Munhwayesul kyoyuk (Cultural Arts Education). At the same time, Munhwa yǒdae (Cultural Action) group’ contribution to Munhwayesul kyoyuk (Cultural Arts Education) came to be overlooked. However, the agendas built by Munhwa yǒdae (Cultural Action) group are still influential in theory and practice of Munhwayesul kyoyuk (Cultural Arts Education). Understanding the project of Munhwa kyoyuk (Cultural Education) leads to the origins of the issues around Munhwayesul kyoyuk (Cultural Arts Education).
