초록

Ecological consciousness is the way of thinking that is a turn from the quantitative values to qualitative values and considers the process more important than the result. This way of thinking is based on the attitude toward Nature, Naturecentered thoughts, and philosophy cherishing Life. At the same time, it makes the nature of existence engage in society through integrative interpretation and causes social collectivization through individual presence. Korean folk dance based on the history and tradition of Korea also causes sense of community through individual presence in the organic relations among nature, life, and dance. In order to illuminate the ecological consciousness in Korean folk dance, this study examines philosophy about body in both the East and the West, and the characteristics of the Korean folk dance based on ecological consciousness. In the Western way of thinking, body is not separated from mind, sense, and thought. Also, interacting with the world or environment, it has a meaning as embodied life, somatic subject. The body in this sense is of natural, universal, social, and cultural. In the Eastern way of thinking that considers the universe as Life, body is seen through “Heaven and man is one,” “Heaven and man are interacting,” and “Man and nature is not separated.” In life, dance lets body think, expand understanding, and make changes. Body is the site in which human being, nature and culture meet and show the result. In Korean folk dance, body is a small universe that contains the world understood in the relationship between human and nature, and the movements contain the characteristics of the universe that reflect the organism among material, force, and mind. In addition, it contains the universal order. Even if a boundary signified difference, it would mean potentiality and capacity of change. Therefore, differences make dynamism and euphoria while making births and extinctions. Traditional Korean dance emphasizes “here” and “now” in life. Therefore, it intends to acquire generative energy for life by dissolving stress of life and awaken the nature. Highly developed civilization and economy cause ecological crisis. As the ecological consciousness can begin the problems of life and values, humans should find a solution for the ecological crisis from the consideration of body and movements.
