Abstract
This study analyzed the mortality risk of the elderly due to high temperatures in 166 municipalities during the past period (2000∼2019). In addition, under future (2050s, 2090s) SSP (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways) climate change scenarios and population projections, the effects of high ambient temperatures on the elderly and regional differences were analyzed. The relative risk and excess mortality were employed to analyze mortality risk. SSP2 4.5 and SSP3 7.0 were used for climate change scenarios. SSP2, SSP3, and KU-pop were used for population projection data. Over the past period, the average relative risk above the 90th percentile temperature for each county was higher for metropolitan cities. However, the excess mortality relative to the elderly population was high in small-and-medium sized cities. In all climate change scenarios, excess mortality in the 2050s and 2090s are projected to increase compare to the past. In the SSP2 4.5 scenario, the excess mortality was highest in the 2050s and decreased thereafter. On the other hand, in the SSP3 7.0 scenario, the excess mortality continued to increase until the 2090s. An increasing pattern of future excess mortality was observed in all regions but was particularly pronounced in metropolitan areas. The results of this study suggest that strengthened health policies and active responses for the elderly are needed under future climate change and heatwave.
