Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the differences in the perceived images of tourist cities and visit characteristics between internal and external visitors, with the aim of deriving theoretical implications as well as practical insights for enhancing regional images through urban marketing. Specifically, focusing on Yongin City's ‘Year of Visits’ project, a representative tourist city in Korea, this study compared and analyzed the differences in perceived city images and visit characteristics between external visitors and internal visitors, including Yongin citizens and public officials. Based on the analysis of survey data provided with scenic photographs of major tourist attractions, the city image of Yongin was found to be ranked as a tourist city, cultural and artistic city, eco-friendly city, transportation hub city, and administrative city, with 64.2% of respondents providing positive responses regarding the city image. The urban landscape and image varied depending on stakeholders, with Yongin citizens and external visitors showing similar tendencies, while public officials recognized problems or had a somewhat conservative perspective on the city's image. Meanwhile, the core marketing target areas for tourism, centered around Yongin City's ‘Year of Visits’ project, were perceived as major tourist attractions (77.3%), eco-tourism sites (77.0%), museums and art galleries (62.9%), dining and shopping tourism sites (59.3%), and historical and cultural tourism sites as well as leisure and resort areas (56.6%). This suggests that major tourist attractions have a significant impact on the city image. The findings of this study imply that each region needs to activate urban tourism by linking existing major tourist attractions with relatively lesser-known sites.
