Abstract
Participatory performance is positioning itself as a form of cultural content by dissolving the boundary between stage and audience. This study analyzes Look- ing for the Princess, a participatory performance, based on Erika Fischer-Lichte’s theory of performativity. Focusing on “the emergence of processual events” and “the shift from the semiotic to the phenomenological body,” this study investigates the conceptual and structural features of performativity. This study identifies the performative transformation process in participatory performances for disabled audiences and aims to expand the forms of performance for disabled individuals. Looking for the Princess, performed around 50 times at welfare centers and special schools from 2017 to 2025, is analyzed in this study. The researcher ob- served and documented performative phenomena through directing and perform- ing in each show, and identified elements and characteristics of performativity through interviews with participants and cast members. The analysis of participa- tory performances with disabled individuals revealed five key aspects: emergent phenomena, autopoietic feedback loops, materiality (sound), atmosphere, and threshold transformation. This study seeks a methodological approach to practicing more inclusive and diverse forms of artistic participation for disabled individuals, providing a founda- tion for practical direction. It also offers fundamental data on the performativity of disability dance participation. Through the analysis of long-term performance experiences, it aims to create a new paradigm in performance and arts education.
