Abstract

Will it be possible for artificial intelligence to write stories in Korean? As ludicrous as this question may sound, the recent development of hyperscale artificial intelligence brings us closer to the answer. This paper aims to explore the potential of an AI writer by examining various domestic and international attempts to develop writing. First, we will look at quantitative reasoning- based story generation devices, including Tale-Spin (1977) and Minstrel (1993) from the United States and StoryHelper (2013) from Korea. In the second half, we will analyze the results of more technologically advanced automatic sentence-generators, such as 「The Day a Computer Writers a Story」 (2016) from Japan and 1 the Road (2018) from the United States. The study of past writing machines will help us identify the problems we must overcome to develop an advanced Korean writing machine. By exploring the possibilities and limitations of simple story generators and complicated sentence generators, we will also reflect on the literary, cultural, and social concerns that advanced writing machines might bring about in the future.
