Abstract

This thesis is a study on the life of Gongjae(恭齋) Yoon Duseo(尹斗緖) (1668-1715). This study, in particular, emphasizes the course of life and companionship of the scholar during a period of transition, the purpose of his pursuit in paintings and writings, and the special features of his works. Gongjae Yoon Duseo’s exceptional and original works are the byproduct of his own life. A number of groundbreaking events have set the course of his life, rendering him to become an artist. Accordingly, this study will explore the influence of his life on his artworks and specifically discover the meaning and features of his work by reviewing the chronicles of his life. Yoon Duseo is the 19th eldest grandson of the Haenam Yoon family. (the Uchoengong Sect) Upon his birth, the Haenam Yoon family thrived economically, politically, scholarly, and artistically. Yoon Duseo may have enjoyed many privileges under such circumstances. However, his position as the eldest grandson of such prosperous family may as well have affected adversely on demonstrating his potential talent and carrying through his convictions. Despite his extraordinary capacity, he was left with no choice but to bear great responsibilities to secure family spirit and property, disenabling him to pursue his dream as a scholar-official. As a result, he has chosen the life of a recluse scholar, and has chosen to follow his dream through scholastic pursuit and paintings and writings. Yoon Duseo‘s paintings portray the will of both a scholar and a painter who has devoted all of his life to realizing the ultimate goal as an intellect while embracing his destiny. Last but not least, this study will examine the realistic aspects of Yoon Duseo by following little details of his life. In doing so, the author has restored his work based upon his own sayings rather than referring to Yoon Duseo‘s records made by his decedents or close people. This study will particularly focus on reestablishing the Yoon Duseo’s lifetime changes at a micro level by utilizing his own writings, historical documents, and his artworks. Finally, the author hopes to convey to the reader the more lively, and realistic aspects of Yoon Duseo, both a scholar and a painter.
