西陂 柳僖의 생애와 詩論

文通의 저자인 柳僖(1773~1837)는 역사, 철학, 문학, 어학 등 여러 학문 분야에서 뛰어난 식견을 가지고 있던 19세기 최고 학자 중의 한 사람이다. 그러나 그동안 문통이 일실되어, 남아 있는 몇 몇 작품을 통해 언어학자로서의 특징만이 부각되어왔다. 최근에 한국학중앙연구원에서 문통을 발굴, 소개하면서 저자인 유희의 진면목이 새롭게 부각되고 있다. 본고에서는 유희의 생애를 그의 한시와 산문 작품을 분석하여 재구성하여 보았고, 시인으로서의 면모를 드러내 보고자 하였다. 유희는 용인에서 태어나 10년간 단양에서 생활한 것을 제외하면 평생을 광주에서 생활하였다. 그의 가문은 대대로 소론계열에 속하는데, 당시의 정치적인 상황으로 인해 사회, 경제적으로는 불우한 삶을 살았다. 즉 과거급제를 통한 정계진출을 추구하였으나 끝내 布衣로 삶을 마칠 수밖에 없었다. 그러나 부친과 모친이 모두 뛰어난 학문의 소유자였고, 당시 명망있는 학자들과 師承, 교유를 통해 심도있는 학문적 역량을 갖추었으며, 그 결과물로 나온 것이 바로 문통인 것이다. 그는 보통의 일반 시인들과는 달리 어느 한 시대의 詩風만을 추구한 것이 아니라, 중국 각 시대별로 가장 뛰어난 長處를 선택하고 그것을 門路로 삼아 학습하였다. 특히 부친과 부친의 벗들로부터 영향을 받아 근체시에 있어서는 江西詩派를 추숭하였는데, 강서시파의 議論과 氣魄을 높이 여긴 까닭이다. 하지만 궁극적으로는 강서시파를 통하여 杜甫의 경지에 도달함을 목표로 하고 있었다.
Abstract
Yu Hee(1773~1837), author of Mun Tong is unquestionably one of the most eminent scholars in the 19th century. Though he is well versed in the field of history, philosophy, literature and linguistics, he is highlighted only in the field of linguistics. Mun Tongrecently introduced through the Academy of Korean Studies makes it possible to understand his true self. This study is to reconstruct his life by analysing some of his poems and proses and to reveal his poetic character. He was born in Yong-in and spent most of his life in Gwang-ju except for 10 years in Dan-yang. As a member of Soron, the Disciples' faction for generations he was in adverse circumstance politically and economically of the day and he was frustrated in his ambition to enter politics by passing the civil service examination. Under the influence of his erudite parents, he associates with the great scholars of the day and deepens his knowledge and goes so far as to complete Mun Tong. His poem theory shows that he did not follow an influential poetical style of a specific day but ranged over an extensive chinese literature as a whole. Especially he advocated Gangseosipa extremely in modern-style under the influence of his father and his father's friends. It was by reason that he considered poems of Gangseosipa was logistic and souled. However, he made an effort to come up to the lever of Du Fu through Gangseosipa.
