Abstract

『Gwancheoyong』 mentioned in Akhakgwebeom is a feast of king and his relatives, which was held after exorcism performance as the last part of Narye. The name Gwancheoyong was first mentioned in Akhakgwebeom published in King Seongjong 24th year of Joseon Dynasty. Gwannahee was differentiated into 'Gwanna' and 'Gwancheoyong'. Gwanna is a feast of king and his subjects while Gwancheoyong was a feast of king and his relatives. One of the most distinct differences was that there was shamanist feature with Gwancheoyong but not with Gwanna. This is seen in the fact that Yeonhwadaejeongjae (lotus flower dance) which was the only dance performed at Gwanna had no shamanist feature while Hakyeonwhadaecheoyongmuhapseol (series of crane, lotus flower and Cheyong dance) or Cheoyongmu performed at Gwancheoyong had. Gwancheoyong is classified into Changgyeong Palace Gwancheoyong and Changdeok Palace Gwancheoyong based on the place where they were held. The size of the former was larger than that of the latter as proved in the fact that Hakyeonwhadaecheoyongmuhapseol was performed at the former while Cheoyongmu was the only one performed at the latter. There were child dancers at Changgyeong Palace Gwancheoyong and child singers at hangdeok Palace Gwancheoyong. Given that female shaman, clown and musical instrument performers were frequently mentioned in Shillok, various performances may have been done in addition to Hapseol Jeongjae (dance) although Akhakgwebeom mentioned only dress and its ornaments of gisaeng (singing and dancing girls) and musical instrument performers. For Yangjaecheoyong which is mentioned in Shillok but not in Akhakgwebeom, it seems to be similar to Changdeok Palace Cheyong. Changdeok Palace Cheyong is Cheoyongmu dance that is performed in 5 directions (east, west, south, north, center) to the song of 6 child singers and the music played by 12 musical instrument performers. In short, it was small in size. As Cheoyongmu was the main performance of Changdeok Palace Cheyong, it may have focused on shamanist aspect just like 'Yangjaecheoyong' mentioned in Shillok. Considering this, the two may have been the same one althought the names were different. There was a record during the King Joongjong 10th year that Yangjaecheoyong was performed on Jan 1 indicating that it was performed not only at year end but also on Jan 1 from that period onward. However, the name of Yangjaecheoyong was found nowhere else after it was mentioned in records only once during the King Joongjong 19th year. Thus, Yangjaecheoyong seems to have no longer been performed and its name disappeared from that period onward. Just like Gwancheoyong, Yangjaecheoyong is a name of feast. The last part of Gwancheoyong is a ceremony where King gives performers cotton stuffs and silk as gifts. The ceremony is held not to appreciate their performance but announce the closure of Narye. As part of the kingship politics, the king gave such gifts to help them survive cold winter in an order based on their seniority.
