만주국 극영화의 제상(諸相)- 만주영화협회의 제작 방향 변화를 중심으로

만주영화협회(이하 만영으로 줄임)에 관한 종래의 연구는 만영의 연혁, 만영에서 활동한 구성원들의 개인사, 제작된 영화들의 줄거리 요약에 중심을 두어왔고, 만영의 역할 또한 선전을 위한 국책영화 제작이라는 평면적인 기술로 일관하고 있다. 왜 이러한 극영화가 제작되었는가라는 만영 내부의 시각에 대한 고찰이 부족했다. 본고는 만영에서 단행된 극영화제작방향의 변화에 초점을 맞추어 만영이 산출한 극영화의 제상(諸相)을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 극영화제작의 방향성은 ‘오락중시’와 ‘만인(滿人)중심’, 두 가지로 요약될 수가 있다. ‘오락중시’는, 대중에 다가가지 못하는 선전성이 농후한 작품보다는 우선 많은 이들에게 접근할 수 있는 오락성 있는 영화제작을 지향하는 것이었다. ‘만인중심’은 두 가지 차원에서 이루어졌다. 한 가지는 제작자체를 ‘만인’에게 담당시키는 것이었고 또 하나는 작품내용을 만주문화의 전통 위에 쌓는 것이었다.만영의 극영화 제작방향의 변화는 단순히 관객동원을 증대시키기 위한 것만은 아니었다. ‘복합민족국가’인 만주국에서 만영이 다민족을 만족시킬 수 있는 영화를 만들어내는 것에 성공한다면 그러한 경험을 통해 ‘동양의 헐리웃’으로서의 역할을 할 수 있다는 만영의 포부가 들어있던 것이다. 또한 대중에 대한 파급력이 강한 영화를 통하여 만주국의 ‘독립적인’ 문화를 만들어내어 ‘만주’라는 ‘상상의 공동체’를 형성하는데 일조하게 하여, 대중 저변으로부터의 내셔널리즘을 환기시키려는 목적도 있었을 것이다.
Abstract
In 1938, under the sponsorship of Manchukuo government, Manei, the Manchurian Motion Picture Association, was established. In the eight year of Manei, it produced one hundred and eight fictional films. This article attempts to examine the characteristics of those films by focusing on the change of the direction of making fictional films. In the early period of Manei, it stressed propaganda function and did not won popularity. So Manei decided to make more fictional 'entertainment' films and to support 'Manchukuo people', who were mostly Chinese, make the films by themselves, not by Japanese. Moreover, the films were supposed to represent 'Manchurian characteristics' on their images and narratives. Those changes were not simply gather more people to watch movies. Manei wanted to broaden its industrial base to whole east asia, in which multi-national peoples exist as same as the circumstance of Manchukuo. And by representing 'Manchurian characteristics', Manei thought it would help to make 'imagined communities' of which name was 'Manchukuo'.
