Abstract

In human history, the forces that spread on the basis of the ocean flourished. It was the result of actively utilizing the advantages of the sea, a treasure trove of human life. In connection with this, conflicts with groups of conflicting interests arose in order to secure resources and trade bases. Nevertheless, in the course of the development of ancient Korean history, the productive search for the operation of the sea and its advantages was insufficient. This paper is the purpose of raising a discussion on the sea power and sea area of the Three Kingdoms period of Korea. The Three Kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla secured not only the land area but also the sea area of their own country. In ancient Korean society, the boundaries of the sea existed. Economic activities such as fishing in their own waters were bound to be exclusive. Rivers and seas were channels of water related to harvesting, the economic foundation of state operation. The type of fish written on the wooden board excavated from Seongsanseong Fortress in Haman would have taken the form of a public payment. It is believed that a significant portion of all marine resources produced in rivers and seas were sent to Seoul in the form of public payment. The sea was a place of punishment that blocked the connection between the present and the afterlife for those who regarded it as a heinous felon who destroyed the community order, a place to throw sacrifices and oceans to solve disasters faced, and a means of inflow or outflow of peoples and civilizations. In relation to the existence and operation of ancient Korean society, the sea played a multi-layered function in various fields such as economy, faith, military, culture, and punishment.
