동양무도와 서양스포츠에 관한 철학적 담론

동양의 전통무도와 서양의 스포츠는 인간의 움직임을 통해 시․공간의 구조적 틀속에서 이루어진다는 점에서 외형적 유사성을 가지고 있다. 그러나 무도와 스포츠에는 동․서양의 각기 다른 문화적, 철학적 요소들이 담겨져 있으며 그것들의 역사적 배경, 관념, 목적들 또한 매우 다른 형태를 지니고 있다. 이러한 까닭에 동양의 관점으로 서양의 스포츠를 이해하려고 한다든가 반대로 서양의 관점에서 동양의 전통무도를 이해하려고 하는 것은 매우 어려운 일에 속할 것이다. 흔히 무도는 내면적 가치를 지향하는 반면 스포츠는 외형적 가치를 지향하며, 무도는 나 자신(인간)이 중심이 되는 반면 스포츠는 신 중심적 사고로부터 출발한다. 또한 무도는 삶과 죽음이라는 근본적인 문제와 직면하고 있는 반면 스포츠는 재미, 취미, 여가와 같은 흥미로운 요소와 관계된다. 뿐만 아니라 무도는 인간과 자연, 우주, 도와 같은 거시적 의미들과 관계되는 반면 스포츠는 룰, 질서, 게임, 행정과 같은 인위적인 제도들과 관계된다. 그러나 무엇보다 중요한 것은 동․서양의 문화가 담겨져 있는 무도와 스포츠를 통해 각기 다른 그들의 특성을 제대로 이해하는 것이며, 이를 통해 동․서양을 대표하는 인간의 신체활동(무도와 스포츠)을 의미를 올바로 이해하는 것이다. 이러한 것들은 어느 것이 좋은 것이고 어느 것은 나쁜 것이라는 이분법적 사고를 배제한 수평적 관점에서 이루어짐을 전제로 한다.
Abstract
I analyzed the fundamental differences between the Eastern martial arts and Western sports, comparing their essences in this paper. It is no doubt that irreconcilable differences exist between the martial arts and sports because of their inherent philosophical stances. That is, there are some differences between martial arts and sports in some aspects such as objects, practice, goals, and history. However, many think the martial arts is synonymous with sports because the forms have been mis-presented in the West. This has led to a misunderstanding of the martial arts. The purpose of the martial arts is entirely different from that of sports. Any similarity is superficial and relates only their engagement in physical activity. It is helpful to understand the meaning of physical activities of the East and the West by examining martial arts and sports.
