이 글은 1652년 2월부터 3월까지 25세의 전도유망한 문인 관료가 경상도 암행어사직을 수행하며 지은 28수의 한시를 통해, 암행어사의 여정과 내면 풍경을 살핀 결과물이다. 남대문으로 나와 동료들과 헤어진 그는 경기 광주를 거쳐 충청의 목천과 황간을 지나 문경새재를 넘었다. 영남 땅에 들어서는 지례, 영해, 경주, 청도, 경산, 영산, 양산, 웅천 등 주로 해안과 강을 끼고 있는 경상좌도를 시찰하면서 공문서와는 별개로 시를 남겼다. 시는 현실에 임한 관료로서, 그리고 그 현실을 그려내고자 하는 시인으로서 겪는 갈등을 보여준다. 효종 대(代)에는 암행어사 파견이 급증하였으나, 그간 대부분의 암행어사 관련 연구는 18세기 전후를 중심으로 진행되었다. 연구 대상 또한 일기, 서계(書契), 별단(別單)에 한정되는 경우가 많았다. 이 글은 암행어사 연구사에서 비교적 소외된 시기인 17세기에 주목하며, 한 인간으로서의 내적 고백과 일상 기록에 충실한 ‘한시’를 중심으로 살폈다는 점에서 차별성을 가진다.
Abstract
This study examines the journey and inner landscape of a secret royal inspector (amhaeng-eosa;暗行御史) through 28 poems written by a 25-year- old promising literary official in the period between February and March of 1652, during his tenure as the secret royal inspector of Gyeongsang Province (慶尙道). Departing from Namdaemun (南大門) and parting ways with his colleagues, he passed through Gwangju (廣州) in Gyeonggi Province (京畿道), Mokcheon (木川) and Hwanggan (黃澗) in Chungcheong Province (忠淸道), and crossed Mungyeong (聞慶) Saejae (Mountain Pass). Entering the Yeongnam (嶺南) region, he inspected Jilye (知禮), Yeonghae (寧海), Gyeongju (慶州), Cheongdo (淸道), Gyeongsan (慶山), Yeongsan (靈山), Yangsan (梁山), and Ungcheon (熊川), primarily coastal and river-bound areas of Gyeongsang Left Province (慶尙左道). In addition to his official reports, he composed poems. These poems reveal the conflicts he experienced as both an official confronted with the realities of governance and a poet striving to portray those realities. During King Hyojong (孝宗)'s reign, the dispatch of secret royal inspectors increased significantly, but most studies on this topic have focused on the late 18th century. Research subjects have also been largely limited to diaries (日記), official reports (seogye;書契), and special memorials (byeoldan;別單). This study distinguishes itself by focusing on the relatively neglected 17th century in the history of secret royal inspectors and by emphasizing the poetic records that reflect personal confessions and daily life, thereby highlighting their unique perspective.
