Abstract

The practice of security martial arts is conducted for its priority purpose of ensuring client‘s personal safety, that is due to be quickly applied at contingent emergency. During the security service, there is an uncertainty with no rules and unrecognizable attacker identity about threat directly/indirectly to client. The security martial arts should be applied to actual security infrastructure where martial arts practice should be focused on defense against various types of attacks as well as training to subdue, because it is unexpected to see the type and scope, unlikely general types of martial arts. In addition, mentality practice should be accompanied, where a secret service man might have to sacrifice oneself to protect other's life. Despite such importance, studies on academic development have not been conducted to a satisfactory level. In addition, there are many challenging issues such as identity, technical skills, standardization and legislation related to security martial arts. Under this circumstance, the attempt was made, in this study, to examine the academic development and introspection. Since mid-1990s, the Department of Security Science established has formed the basis for academic development for Department of Security Science, where the subject included in curriculum or the security martial arts spreaded nationwide through teams and circles. Additionally, security martial arts gained some recognition through Presidential Security Service, while a private security service company wanted to hire experienced security martial arts staff. However, studies on academic development of security martial arts have not met such needs. Even though being well positioned as academic sector, it is fortunate to see the decision made to contain security martial arts in the scope of column submission by the rules of The Journal of Korean Alliance of Martial Arts. To ensure its further development, there will be the needs to establish terminology, to develop unique skills, to standardize/make manuals of security martial arts and to activate the research on security martial arts division as an academic sector. In addition, it should be legally supported.
