Abstract
Since the global financial crisis, sovereign CDS spread is actively used as the representative index showing a default risk of a country and a risk in the financial markets, but CDS has been traded for the speculation purpose and there has also been criticism that the rise in CDS spread caused the unstable financial markets and CDS market was not efficient. The existing literatures focused on explaining the determinants of CDS spread in relation to the bond market or stock market, the time series characteristic of sovereign CDS spread is not known. This paper investigates the time series characteristics of Asian sovereign CDS spread and market efficiency. Analysis results using the ARFIMA-FIGARCH model show that the CDS spread change is not found the long-memory feature and supports market efficiency in 7 Asian countries. But, the volatility of CDS spread is found the long-memory in all countries and this facts imply that a persistent volatility can be used to forecast the default risk and the risk of the financial markets in 7 Asian countries.
