Abstract
Okjunghwa, which emerged in the early twentieth century, functioned as a point of transition linking the Chunhyang narratives of traditional society with those of the modern era. This study seeks to situate Okjunghwa within cultural history by examining its narrative in relation to various versions of Chunhyangjeon produced in traditional society and to the social realities of late Joseon. The primary aim is not to reconstruct the author's explicit intentions or claims, but rather to investigate how the narrative was organized as a whole. Although the distinctive motifs of Okjunghwa are acknowledged, particular attention is given to minor and concrete details where the author's intention is less visibly at work. The first characteristic to be pointed out in the narrative is the contradiction and confusion inherent in its structure. The text repeatedly insists that Chunhyang is not a courtesan; yet both objective circumstances and Chunhyang's own words reveal otherwise. Although Okjunghwa has been described as shifting its thematic focus from social issues such as status conflict to the romantic love of its two protagonists, even this love unfolds within contradictions and dissonances that are absent from other versions and inconsistent with the broader narrative context. The coercive force surrounding Chunhyang's chastity (烈) is further intensified, while the figure of Chunhyang as an independent subject―so prominent in earlier versions―undergoes significant erosion. The episode often cited as an exemplary instance of rational revision turns out, in fact, to be an irrational distortion at odds with social reality. The text increasingly aligns itself with the interests of the ruling elite, while reinforcing unilateral and oppressive attitudes toward popular society and the lower classes. At the center of these tendencies lies a disjunction from reality. Chunhyangjeon of traditional society, even under the strong centripetal force of ideological orthodoxy, was able to maintain narrative coherence and secure popular affection because it never departed from lived reality. Okjunghwa, by contrast, lacking any vision of a new social order, ultimately dismantled the thematic consciousness and narrative unity that Chunhyangjeon of traditional society had accumulated over centuries. This occurred precisely because its narrative unfolded in estrangement from the lived experiences of the common people.
