Abstract
This study aims to examine the poetic theory of Seoam (恕菴) Shin Jeong-ha (申靖夏, 1681-1716), explore the characteristics of his poetic world based on that theory, and ultimately elucidate the literary significance of his poetry within Korean literary history. There are three reasons for addressing Shin Jeong-ha's poetic theory and Sino-Korean poetry (한시) in this study. First is Shin's deep interest in classical poetry; second, his notable literary reputation; and third, the diverse aspects reflected in his poetic works. An analysis of his poetic theory reveals that Shin emphasized "poetic education” (詩敎) based on traditional poetic principles, advocating the creation of poetry imbued with sincere and natural emotions. He also recognized the rhetorical elements in poetry, paying attention to the use of diction and imagery centered around authenticity. Reflecting these views, Shin left behind a wide array of poems. His works exhibit both poetry aimed at moral and didactic purposes and poetry that emphasizes aesthetic beauty. Consequently, the characteristics of Shin's poetic world can be divided into two categories: the "world of poetry for moral edification and self-cultivation” and the "world of poetry centered on aesthetic delight and wit.” Shin's poetic theory closely resembles that of his mentor, Nongam (農巖), who sought to restore the traditional values of poetry and the status of poets. Therefore, the significance of Shin Jeong-ha's poetry lies in his efforts to inherit traditional poetic theories and to reestablish the importance of poetry, following in the footsteps of his teacher.
