Abstract
The purpose of this study is to critically examine the Western-centric limitations of sports globalization discourse, primarily through a literature review, and to explore the alternative concept of the “Centralization of the Periphery” as a way to overcome these limitations. Existing globalization discussions are predominantly structured around a unidirectional narrative in which sports such as soccer and baseball originated in the West and spread to the non-Western world. Even the concept of glocalization, which aims to supplement this narrative, remains entrenched in a Western-centric perspective. Accordingly, this study analyzes the reverse and complex processes through which non-Western physical cultures such as Korea's Taekwondo, Japan's Judo, and India's Yoga have spread globally. It aims to demonstrate that sports globalization is not merely a process of cultural transmission but an active and interactive phenomenon involving interpretation, transformation, and hybridization. In particular, “Centralization of Periphery” is proposed as a concept that alleviates the asymmetry and diversity in global sports culture through the symbolic representation and ritualization of local traditions. The practical applicability of this concept is explored through the philosophy and rituals of Korean traditional archery (Gukgung). Through this, the study seeks to provide a theoretical framework for globalization strategies based on the identity and locality of non-Western physical cultures, contributing to the pluralism of sports culture and the formation of new centers of significance.
