Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the moderated effect of failure perception and perfectionism on self-handicapping strategies in high school dance classes. 291 dance students (19 boys, 272 girls) from arts high schools responded to questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical regression analysis. The results of hierarchical regression analysis were as follows; (1) Students' dance careers and majors did not influence directly to their self-handicapping, but their perception of failure was a strong predictor of self-handicapping. (2) Self-handicapping were predicted by negative reaction to imperfection positively and by striving perfection negatively. (3) When students with high failure perception pursued high perfectionism, their level of self-handicapping was high. When they perceived failure low, pursuing low perfectionism showed higher self-handicapping than pursuing high perfectionism. In conclusion, the results of the study suggest that teachers' positive feedback and concerns are required for the students with low skills.
