Abstract

"This article aims to review utilization of methodology regarding visual and image data for research on North Korean urban history. Visual data were divided into maps (normal, satellite, and image maps) and report and record photographs, and the image data were restricted to normal edited material in North Korean TV broadcast. First, visual and image data provide position information that composes the space which cannot be found in literature. Second, accumulative analysis of three maps clearly suggests the arrangement and hierarchy of urban spaces. Third, report and record photographs enable clarification of relationship between urban identity designated by the government and one perceived by actors. Fourth,image data enable expansion of spatial imagination through 3D location image and perception and interpretation o furban population’s social behavior through cinematic story composition and character interview. Fifth, however, as not all visual and image data are significant, it is very important to choose and use databased on media, type, and heme. The conclusion is that visual and image data must be used selectively considering the relationship with literature and oraldata which are basis of research on urban history."
