Abstract

This author determined that there was a limit to building the back story in the existing way that deducing logical inferences from the small clues hidden in the script in the process of building character action for the character Arkadina of the play "Seagull". Although it may have certainty as an actor, it is not easy to get out of the framework of the interpretation of the previous Arkadina. This author found Arkadina's three characteristics during the pre-production process: eternal youth and an obsession to the career of an actor, a desire for praise, and a relation to a goal. From these characteristics, this author deduced that narcissistic personality disorder personality is typical. Thus, this paper compared the diagnostic criteria of the narcissistic personality disorde described in DSM-5, which is a diagnosis of psychiatric disorder, and the statistical manual, and Arkadina was sufficiently judged to be narcissistic personality disorder. Thus, by using the narcissistic personality disorder analysis tool, it is possible to complement the existing building the back history method which was expected to be imagined by the actor's imagination, to assure objectivity and to draw the physical type of the person based on the script clues this author also found a possibility. Here, the physical type refers to the relationship between the cause of the onset of the mental disorder and the particular type of behavior that appears externally. In addition, the method described above was used not only in the analysis process, but also in practical research that actually plays on the stage during actual production. In other words, the theoretical results through analysis of narcissistic personality disorder were embodied by the immediate emotional change and the physical change following the outward characteristic of the play. In addition, the 'bipolar training' and 'verse and gesture technique' of Roussafora's action theater improvisation training technique are introduced to the production process by judging that it can be applied to various instantly rapidly varying emotions and their physical expressions.. The result of this study is to analyze the Arkadina as a personality disorder through the actual production process and to present a practical methodology to build up the physical style as well as the building the back history with character objectivity.
