Abstract
This study analyzed the content of, and the visitors’ responses to, the participatory art exhibitions, 『Do it, 2017 Seoul』, which was created by the Illim Museum of Art and the Angjiang Group, and 『Calligraphy is the way to communicate with the most primal power』, which was created by the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea. This research sought to understand the meanings visitors attributed to their artistic engagement with these works of art and to contribute to the design of future participatory exhibitions. Although the written directions provided by 『Do it, 2017 Seoul』 and the participatory performance and workshop included in the 『Angjiang Group: Calligraphy is the way to communicate with the most primal power』” promoted visitors’ artistic engagement and helped improve their understanding of contemporary art, neither exhibition was able to facilitate social interactions among visitors, and both left visitors confused regarding appropriate museum etiquette. Based on these findings, I offer three suggestions for improving the design of participatory exhibitions. First, to help visitors understand artists’ creative process, participatory exhibitions should provide devices such as materials, performances, and events, which let visitors produce their own creations related to a particular artwork. Next, to reduce visitors’ confusion regarding appropriate behavior in a museum, staff should provide clear and consistent instructions about how to participate in the exhibition. Finally, visitor engagement in exhibitions should include not only personal involvement in the artwork but also interaction with other visitors.
