Abstract
Cognitive linguist George Lakoff and linguist/philosopher Mark Johnson state that one’s thought process is structured through various 'metaphors,' which are pre-linguistic activities. A ‘concept’ aris es from an 'image schema,' which is generated through the spatial mapping of one’s bodily experi ences in the tactile world. In this context, 'metaphor' is not merely a rhetorical practice: based on the holistic mind-body operation, it is the embodied cognition of the environment with which one, as a neural being, is constantly in physical contact. Sensory-motor in its mechanism, the image sche ma systemically integrates perceptual and symbolic cognition and has been employed as a framework for performance and theater studies. Most importantly, because of its performative nature, the con cept can be specifically applied to the study of stage scenography and spectatorship as a working apparatus. Performers, stage machinery, and spectators—all as active agents in an image-making pro duction—together establish the semantics of performance as the organization of sensory-motor expe riences across multiple bodies, shifting the focus from written texts to phenomena of multimodal interactions. Here, the stage, as a visual field, the spatial deployment, and the metaphor, segmen talize the flux of movements into a series of semanteme, restructuring them into a coherent, inter personal narrative.
