Abstract
The narrative of Farewell My Concubine originated as a representative repertoire of traditional Chinese Peking Opera and has been repeatedly reproduced across various genres through its ex pansion into different media. This study examines how the classical narrative is repeated and trans formed in three distinct adaptations, Peking Opera(1922), film(1993), and Korean changgeuk(2019), and how these changes influence audience memory and reception. Employing Marvin Carlson’s theory of theatre as a memory machine and film genre theory as analytical frameworks, the study compares these adaptations by focusing on narrative structure, genre conventions and strategies of reception, and the function of memory in each work. The Peking Opera version reinforces collective memory through the repetition of traditional performance language, while the film introduces layered memory by blending multiple genre elements. The changgeuk reinterprets the narrative through cultural trans lation, highlighting a reconstructive mode of memory rooted in genre grammar. This research con tributes to performance and film studies by tracing how classical narratives are reappropriated across genres and how these practices shape contemporary modes of cultural memory.
