북한에서 중요한 국가적 행사인 열병식은 대내적으로는 대중들을 결집하고 지배체제를 결속하는데 활용되며, 대외적으로는 강한 국방력을 과시하는 장이자 체제의 의도를 표출하는 선전선동 방법으로 자리매김하고 있다. 김정은 정권은 2020년 당 창건일 75주년 기념행사에서 기존과 달리 심야에 열병행사를 개최하며 변화를 선보였다. 이에 본 연구는 김정은 정권이 심야열병식을 통해 추구하는 정치적·군사적 의도와 특징을 사회·심리학적 개념을 활용하여 체계적으로 분석 하였다. 구체적으로 빛과 색채가 인간의 심리와 행동에 미치는 영향에 관한 이론적 틀을 바탕으로, 김정은 시대 심야열병식의 전략적 기능과 의미를 규명하고자 하였다. 결과적으로, 심야열병식의 정치적 특징은 인공조명을 활용해 최고지도자의 정치적 위상을 부각시키고, 축제적 분위기를 통해 체제 불만을 감소시켜 정권 안정 화를 추구하며, 전통적 이데올로기 동원의 한계를 넘어선 새로운 형태의 체제 정당성 확보를 도모하는 것으로 나타났다. 군사적 측면에서는 고도화된 핵무력을 통한 전략적 기만과 대외 억지 효과, 빛과 조명을 활용한 선별적 정보 은닉과 공개의 시각적 조작, 그리고 북한군의 전투 기조 극대화와 군 사기 진작 추구라는 특징을 보였다. 이처럼 김정은 시대 심야열병식은 정치적 스펙터클과 군사적 기만술이 융합된 고도화된 전략적 도구로서 기능하고 있다. 따라서 향후에도 북한이 대내외적으로 정치·군사적 메시지를 전달하는 중요한 플랫폼으로 심야열병식을 지속 활용할 가능성에 대해 예의주시할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
The military parade, a significant national event in North Korea, serves dual functions: domestically, it consolidates public unity and reinforces the regime’s control, while externally, it acts as a stage for demonstrating military strength and conveying the regime’s intentions through propaganda. Notably, the Kim Jong Un regime introduced a major change by holding the 75th anniversary parade of the Party Foundation Day in 2020 at night, diverging from previous practices. This study systematically analyzes the political and military intentions and characteristics pursued by the Kim regime through the nighttime parade, employing socio-psychological concepts. Specifically, it utilizes a theoretical framework regarding the psychological and behavioral effects of light and color on humans to elucidate the strategic functions and significance of nighttime parades in the Kim Jong Un era. The analysis reveals that, politically, the nighttime parade accentuates the supreme leader’s authority through artificial lighting, fosters a festive atmosphere to mitigate public discontent and stabilize the regime, and seeks to establish a new form of regime legitimacy that transcends the limits of traditional ideological mobilization. From a military perspective, the parade is characterized by strategic deception and external deterrence via advanced nuclear capabilities, visual manipulation through selective concealment and disclosure using light and illumination, and efforts to maximize the combat posture and morale of the North Korean military. Thus, the nighttime military parade under Kim Jong Un functions as a sophisticated strategic instrument that fuses political spectacle with military deception, and is likely to remain a key platform for North Korea to deliver political and military messages both domestically and internationally in the future.
