Abstract

Coloring in Palaces and public offices or temples means Dancheong(丹靑 ; traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings) to paintthe buildings with traditional multicolored paints to make the buildingsmore magnificent and luxurious. In this process patterns were inscribedon wooden parts, wall and interior and exterior surfaces. In case ofDancheong in Palaces and public offices, Jeongjeon(正殿) showedcharacteristics of protocol with static and magnificent beautysymbolizing the authority and power of the king, while in case oftemple, Geumdancheong(錦丹靑) with vivid colors and morecomplicated patters was the main trend. In ‘Chosungojeokdobo(朝鮮古蹟圖譜)’ where pictures of Changbang(昌枋) and Dori(道理) remained only and ‘Sungjeongjeon(崇政殿)’ whichis not restored in Kyunghee Palace(慶喜宮), while in Changbang andDori lining was performed on Yeonhwameoricho(蓮花紋), the ceilingpattern of ‘Jeonggakwon(正覺院)’ has ‘Ssangyong‐two dragons’ beingconsistent with ‘Chosungojeokdobo’ although there are partial changes. Given this, Dancheong of Jeonggakwon is in line of Buddhisttemple, adopting Ssangyongmun(雙龍紋) symbolizing sovereign poweras Jeongjeon in celing patterns, and using Yeonhwameoricho in thetransverse‐member. Although ‘Sungjeongjeon’ plays a role of ‘Buddhist Sanctuary(寺刹法堂)’ under the name of ‘Jeonggakwon’, it can be restored as Jeongjeon ofPalace by equipping with original frame of Dancheong based on therecords of ‘Chosungojeokdobo.’
