Abstract

This article shows that the development of hermeneutics in Zen studies in the US was kindled by the debate between Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki (1870-1966) and Hu Shih (1891-1962). Hu Shih criticized Suzuki, broadly renowned as the first spreader of Japanese Zen to the West, for misinterpreting Zen by ignoring its history. Hu Shih maintained that to understand Zen is to know its historical, cultural, and political conditions and accused Suzuki of failing to pay attention to the historical and cultural emergence of Zen as a spiritual tradition. However, Suzuki rebuked Hu Shih for his ignorance of the essence of Zen, that is, the ahistorical nature of Zen. Suzuki maintained that true Zen cannot be accessed through ordinary thought and it is above space-time relations, and naturally even above historical facts. Their hermeneutics represent the two main methods of American Zen studies, positivism and romanticism out of which historical approach and philosophical hermeneutics have grown. These seemingly incompatible viewpoints on Zen have been gradually integrated through both sides’ openness to each other and acceptance of criticism. The methodological development in Zen studies could be made by co-dependence of the historicity and the ahistoricity of Zen.
