Abstract
This copy considered the motivation, background, purpose of Tanheo's translation with Buddhist sutras, the point of view and a style of translation with scriptures, the sorts of scriptures translated, the characteristic of original script, and the meaning in history his translation work had and the influence to Gangwon education ect. Tanheo had started publishing the translation with Hyuntoe,『Yukjodan-gyeong』, in 1960 and made complete translations with basic sutras to study in Korea buddhism which including textbooks used at traditional Gangwon for about 23years and important zen quotations, published them until his death(70years-old) in 1983. The sutras he translated with Hyuntoe are 『Yukjodan-gyeong』(Vol. 1, 1960), 『Bojo's literature of Buddhism』(Vol. 1, 1963), 『Youngga's colleted writings』(Vol. 1), 『The New Avatamska Sutra treatise summing all』(Vol. 47, 1975), 『Seojang』(Vol. 1, 1976), 『Doseo』(Vol. 1, 1976), 『Jeolyo』(Vol. 1, 1976), 『Seonyo』(Vol. 1, 1976), 『The Surangama Sutra』(Vol. 5, 1981), 『The Mahayanashraddhotpada Shastra』(Vol 3, 1981), 『The Diamond Sutra』(Vol. 3, 1981), 『The Mahavaipulya-purnabudha Sutra』(Vol. 3, 1981), 『The door of monasticism』(Vol. 1, 1982)과 『The Initial Self-discipline』(Vol. 1, 1982) - 14 kinds, 70 volumes. And also there are total 17 kinds 76 volumes including『Juyeokseonhae』(Vol. 3) which written by seon monk UikJiuk(1599-1655) in the Ming Dynasty,『Lao-tzu Dao De Jing』(Vol. 3) and『Jangja』(Vol. 1), not buddhist scriptures. The reason Tanheo made a complete translation, publication of the basic sutras in Korea Buddhism as texts of traditional Gangwon was to use as textbooks for training the talented, au fond the spirit of education, so called training the talented, and the spirit of reformation for youngers were based. Because it was also that Tanheo had tried to boost up the business(everlasting business) through education and fostering students that would not be the end. If examining the sutras Tanheo translated, we can find some significants. First, if we look at the sutras he translated, mostly they are the texts in use at traditional Gangwon as the basic sutras of Korea buddhism, Second, if looking into the annotation book of his translation text, not the book putting more weight on a literal interpretation traditional Gangwon considered as important, it was the book focusing on meaning interpretation, interpreted with the point of view of Seon. Third, Tanheo's translation texts were all choosing the way of literal interpretation. It was because any personal thought of interpreter should not be in the translation of sutras. And also he had thought that a literal interpretation been needed to educate the talented, in other word, a professional scholar. As mentioned above, Tanheo had translated and published almost all the basic sutras considered significant in Korea Buddhism including texts in use at traditional Gangwon, we can say what he had done the vast store by himself from translation to publication without any national or denominational help doesn't have a little meaning.
