본 논문에서는 불교와 관련하여 비교종교학을 다룬 연구물들을 분석했다. “결집, 한국불교학 40년: 그 연구성과와 과제”라는 이번 학회지의 제목이 말해주는 바와 같이 광범위한 연구물을 분석대상으로 하여 본 논문이 목표로 한 것은 관련된 자료를 많이 소개하는 것보다는 비교종교학의 전반적인 흐름을 개관함으로써 불교학에서 비교종교학에 대한 이해를 넓히고 나아가서 불교학에서 비교종교학의 활성화를 도모한다는 것이다. 그에 따라 불교관련 연구물들은 크게 개별 종교전통에 대한 비교연구와, 방법론 및 정체성에 대한 연구의 둘로 나뉜다. 개별 종교전통에 대한 연구에는 개별종교 비교, 지역관련 비교, 시대 관련 비교의 세 가지가 있다. 방법론 및 정체성에 관한 연구물들은 다시 방법론, 종교다원주의, 종교 갈등 및 한국 종교다원주의의 정체성에 관한 연구의 세 가지로 구분된다. 불교학에서의 비교종교학 연구의 활성화와 관련된 연구물들은 마지막에 결론을 대신하여 분석하도록 한다. 많은 연구물들을 분석함으로써 새삼스럽게 확인된 사실은 기독교의 불교 연구는 양과 질 모두에 있어서 상당한 수준에 이르고 있는 데 반하여 불교에서 기독교를 비롯한 타종교에 대한 연구는 미미하기 짝이 없다는 것이다. 현재 우리나라에서 일어나고 있는 불교와 기독교의 갈등상황을 앞에 두고, 불교학자거나 기독교학자거나, 많은 학자들이 의견일치를 보이고 있는 것은 근본주의 기독교의 배타적인 태도에 대처하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 불교에서 타종교를 알아야하고 그를 위해서 불교학에서 비교종교학이 활성화되어야 한다는 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper the writings dealing with both Religious Studies andBuddhist Studies are analyzed. Having innumerable materials collectedfrom more than 40 years, in celebration of the journal of KoreanBuddhist Studies’ 40th anniversary, this article is aiming at taking ageneral view of the main topics of Religious Studies in order to havea better understanding of Religious Studies from the Buddhistperspective and to promote Religious Studies in the Buddhist Studies. According to the topics of Religious Studies, the collected materialsare classified into two parts, one being the comparative studies dealingwith more than two religions, and the other being the articlesinvestigating matters of the methods or identity of Religious Studies. The comparative studies are further divided into the exploration ofindividual religions, a comparison of religions of different regions, orthe analysis of religions within particular historical time periods. Studiesrelated to the matter of methods or identity can further be sortedaccording to methods, religious pluralism, and religious conflicts andthe identity matter of Korean religion. In the conclusion the researchdealing with the promotion of Religious Studies in Buddhist Studies willbe investigated. That which is confirmed as the result of this paper is that, whileresearch of other religions, including Buddhism in Christianity,demonstrate a considerably higher standard of quality and prolificquantity, the Buddhist research relating to other religions, includingChristianity, is not worth mentioning. Confronting religious conflict between Buddhism and Christianity in present day Korea, manyresearchers, whether Buddhist or Christian, unanimously concur thatBuddhism should have a working understanding of other religions, and,for that purpose, Religious Studies should be promoted in BuddhistStudies in order to deal with the exclusive attitude of Christianfundamentalism.
