기도가피에 대한 동곡 일타의 관점

본 논문은 동곡 일타(東谷日陀)의 기도가피관을 규명하고자 한다. 그는 한국불교 기도문화의 선순환적 발전 가능성을 제시한 근현대 한국 승단의 대표적 인물이다. 그의 기도가피관은 이와 관련된 여러 행적의 사상적 토대라는 점에서 본 연구는 의의가 있다. 제Ⅱ장에서는 일타의 기도가피관이 형성된 배경을 추론하였다. 형성 배경은 다음의 두 가지로 수렴되었다. 첫째, 그와 그의 주변에서 발생한 여러 이적과 그 이적의 선한 영향력에 대한 불교적 가치 규명의 필요성이다. 둘째, 한국불교 기도문화 비판에 대한 한국불교계 지도자로서의 대응이다. 제Ⅲ장에서는 일타가 제시한 기도법을 분석하였다. 그리고 이를 토대로 기도성취 기제 작동의 전제 조건을 검토하고, 기도성취 기제를 구체화하였으며, 그의 기도가피관이 갖는 특징과 의의를 도출하였다. 이 과정에서 일타가 기도가피를 기도삼매의 작용으로 보았다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 그는 일념삼매(一念三昧)에 이르면 기도가 성취되고, 일념삼매가 더욱 깊어져 무심삼매(無心三昧)가 되면 오도(悟道)의 경지에 이르게 된다고 하였다. 기도가피에 대한 그의 관점은 기도를 타력 신앙으로만 보는 기존의 시각에서 간과된 수행적 측면을 부각하여, 한국불교의 기도문화가 세간적 욕구와 출세간적 가치를 모두 포용할 수 있는 전통임을 보여준다.
Abstract
This study examines the characteristics and significance of Ven. Donggok Ilta(東谷日陀)’s perspective on Adhiṣṭhāna in prayer. By analyzing the prayer-fulfilling mechanism, the study seeks to elucidate his unique understanding and practical approach to Adhiṣṭhāna in prayer. In Section Ⅱ, the background is investigated. Two main factors influenced his perspective. The first was his personal experiences of events associated with prayer throughout his life. The second was his role as a leader in the Korean Buddhist samgha during a period of conflicting views on prayer practices. In section Ⅲ, the mechanism of prayer-fulfillment as presented by Ven. Ilta is analyzed. At first, preconditions for prayer fulfillment. He emphasized two essential things-minds in prayer and key Buddhist prayers. The second, an analysis of the prayer- fulfilling mechanism he presented. The third, the characteristics and significance of the perspective on Ven. Ilta’s Adhiṣṭhāna of prayer. Ven. Ilta’s perspective on Adhiṣṭhāna of prayer challenges the traditional understanding of it as solely dependent on external ones. Instead, he redefined prayer as a dynamic interaction between the practitioner’s inner effort and the compassionate vows of Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. His views illuminate how prayer, while addressing worldly needs, can also serve as a gateway to transcendental realization.
