Abstract

This study examines the theological structure of sacredness in Christian thought through the lens of Mircea Eliade’s concept of the sacred and the profane, with a specific focus on its implications for disability. Historically, Christian theology has framed the sacred based on normative physical and emotional conditions, often marginalizing or excluding disabled individuals from full participation in religious life. By employing a hermeneutic methodology, this paper integrates symbolic criticism and discourse analysis to explore the symbolic construction of bodily difference within biblical narratives. The analysis focuses on five key scriptural passages-Exodus 4:10~12, Leviticus 21:16~24, Isaiah 35:5~6, John 9:1~3, and 2 Corinthians 12:7~10-tracing how the sacred order has been theologically encoded to function in exclusionary ways toward disability. Drawing on Eliade’s theory of spatial and temporal hierophany, the study critiques how sacred space and time have historically been defined through ableist norms. Building on the theoretical foundation of disability theology, particularly in its emphasis on embodied subjectivity and spiritual agency, the paper proposes an alternative theological framework in which sacredness is reimagined through the lived realities and sensory experiences of disabled persons. By destabilizing the symbolic hierarchies that render disability as incompatible with holiness, this research opens up possibilities for a more inclusive sacred order. Ultimately, the study contributes to interdisciplinarydialogue between theology and disability studies, offering a theological critique of exclusionary symbols while laying the groundwork for a more just and inclusive Christian ecclesiology.
