초록

Examining a small cross-section of artworks in contemporary Korean art ranging from video to figurative sculpture and immersive sound and multi-media installation, this article examines how they attempt to convey an aesthetic response to compressed modernity by turning to breath and air as formal devices to question not only the impact of compressed modernity on the human body, but also to generate modes of perception that enable us to shift how we think about this phenomenon. Air and breathing come to structure movement in time and space and to expose the limits of our sense of place and being in ways that reinstate the body, and to show how we have come to perceive media and the shapes to which they give rise.
