본고는 염상섭의 『삼대』와 『취우』를 중심으로 여성주체의 시선이 근대를 바라보는 방식에 대해 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 두 소설에서 여성주체는 근대적 삶을 충실히 살아가면서 동시에 그 견고한 구조를 다른 방향으로 보게 하는 굴절된 시선을 던진다. 먼저 『삼대』의 홍경애는 유머적인 태도로서 견고한 근대 제도의 이면을 드러낸다. 반성적 이성이 지배층에 대항하는 데 실패한 지점에서 경애는 익살과 유머, 언어유희로서 상훈으로 대변되는 부르주아적 위선을 폭로한다. 한편 『취우』의 강순제는 전쟁과 같이 순간적이고 우연적인 것들에 의해 자신을 구성하면서도 전체적인 삶의 방향을 주도하는 거대한 수평적 흐름을 인식한다. 이러한 일상적인 삶의 영속성을 통해 그는 이데올로기적으로 고착화된 전쟁 개념에 종속되지 않는 새로운 시선을 획득한다. 여성주체의 시선을 통해 바라본 근대는 이처럼 다양한 양상을 드러내고 있다. 이렇듯 근대란 하나의 정의로 강제되는 것이 아니라 다양한 속성들을 가지고 있으며, 이러한 성격이 바로 근대의 가능성으로 이어지게 된다.
Abstract
This paper is focused on how the eye of female subject sees the modernity, especially in Yom Sangseop's Samdae and Chuiwoo. In these novels, the Female subjects fully live the modern life and throw the refracted eye which gives a different angle to the firm structure as wll. Firstly, Hong Kyeongae in Samdae reveals the different side of firm modern system as humourous attitudes. She exposes bourgeois hypocrisy with humour and pun at the point where the reflective reason is defeated by master reason. Then, Kang Soonje in Chuiwoo constructs herself by momentary and accidental things like a war but she realises the huge horizontal flow. This continuity of everyday experiences gives her the new eye not to be subordinated to the ideaological rules. The eye of female subject reveals various aspects of modernity. The modernity is not forced to be defined as a proposition, but has various attributes, which make potential modernity.
