Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the empirical validity of processes in knowledge management models. In order to achieve this purpose, six knowledge management models were chosen based on the frequency of being cited by other researchers. Total of 13 common processes exist within those models were identified through a review. The study employed quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative method is based on a data set collected from a survey with 29 employees in the Office of State Comptroller’s Local Government Services division in the State of New York. The qualitative method is based on the interview transcripts collected from four interview rounds with 60 employees in the same agency during 2006-2008. Results indicated that processes in knowledge management models have empirical validity and being used in a real organization. In addition, within these processes, we can identify areas where there appear to be consistencies and inconsistencies between the results of quantitative and qualitative data. Finally, results identified a group of knowledge management processes with strong empirical evidence and a group of processes with moderate support. Taken together, these results signify some important implications for acceptance of knowledge management models.
