이 연구는 신비주의에 대한 정신분석적 연구로서 힐데가르트의 신비적 환시에 대한 정신분석학적 이해를 다룬다. 중세 성기의 여성신학자, 떼라피스트, 음악가, 설교자, 그리고 영적 지도자로서 빙엔의 힐데가르트(1098-1179)를 사로잡은 “살아 있는 빛의 그림자”는 그녀로 하여금 모든 고통과 염려를 망각하고 생명력 넘치는 존재로 살아가도록 만들었다. 자신의 시각 장 안으로 쏟아져 들어오는 빛에 의해서 ‘보여짐’을 당함으로써 그녀는 보아야 할 것, 곧 진리를 ‘보는’ 존재로 형성되어 간 것이다. 이는 정신분석학자 자끄 라캉(Jacques Lacan, 1901-1981)이 제시한 ‘응시’(gaze)의 경험에 상응하는데, 응시는 우리의 통상적인 시선 자체가 붕괴되는 지점에서 발생하는 ‘진리 사건’으로서 주체를 구성하는 언어적 질서인 ‘상징계’의 억압을 빠져나가는 충동이다. 응시의 경험을 통하여 힐데가르트는 상징계가 제시하는 욕망의 충족이 아니라 그러한 욕망의 충족의 불가능성에 대한 자각을 기초로 ‘여성적 주이상스’를 향유하였고 당대의 신학적 언어를 차용하여 자신의 환시를 쓰고 말하는 실천을 감행하였다. 이러한 ‘증환적’ 실천은 그녀의 환시가 정신병적인 망상 혹은 폐쇄적 영성이 아니라 그리스도교 주체의 영성 형성 과정이었음을 증명한다.
Abstract
A psychoanalytic study of mysticism, this study provides a psychoanalytic understanding of Hildegard’s mystical visions. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), the woman theologian, therapist, musician, evangelist, and spiritual director in the High Middle Ages, was captivated by “the reflection of the living light,” which helped her overcome all her pains and worries and to become a person of vitality. ‘Being seen’ by the light penetrating into her optical field, she was able to ‘see’ what she ought to see, that is, the truth. I argue that this life of seeing exemplified in her mystical visions and writings has much to do with Jacques Lacan’s theory of ‘gaze.’ The truth event, which occurs where our normal vision collapses, gaze is the drive that slips away from the oppression of the symbolic, linguistic order, in which the subject is previously constituted. In the experience of gaze, Hildegard was able to enjoy the ‘feminine jouissance,’ not the satisfaction of the desire by the symbolic, on the basis of the awareness of its impossibility and undertake the practice of writing and speaking about her experiences. Hildegard’s practice of ‘sinthome’ indicates that her mystical visions are neither psychic delusions nor exclusive spirituality but the formation process of the Christian subject.
