Abstract
This study researched the aspects and meanings of women's loosing chastity in 19th-century Sino-Korean Novel with “Ihwasiljeon” and “Ohugangjeon”. Through this, this paper attempted to examine the cracks and changes in ethical consciousness that occurred in the chastity ideology. In 19th-century Sino-Korean Novel, a number of female characters who are honest with their sexual desires and actively realize sexual subjectivity appear. However, apart from this, it is common for women's loosing chastity to be negatively narrated, such as punishment and death. On the other hand, in the 19th-century Sino-Korean Novel features not only voluntary and subjective loosing chastity women but also female characters who break up by conspiracy and deception appear. They can be seen as deviating from the existing ethical consciousness in that they do not receive punishment or death, but form a new family through a new marriage and enjoy a rich and happy life. Female characters loosing chastity in 19th-century Sino-Korean Novels, including “Ihwasiljeon” try to break away from the chastity ethics of oppressing themselves, but as their desires are frustrated, they have contributed to advocating or strengthening the chastity ideology. But in the case of “Ohugangjeon”, it is revealed the fictitious nature of the chastity ideology, as people around female characters conspire to destroy female characters who want to adhere to the chastity ethics. The imagery of women's loosing chastity in 19th-century Sino-Korean Novels is meaningful in that it reveals the backside of women in the 19th century who cannot be generalized due to the spread of women's education and the internalization of Confucian ethics. This is because signs of cracking and dismantling of chastity ideology can be found in these novels.
