Abstract

University general education plays a crucial role in developing students’ critical thinking skills and civic literacy, with an increasing emphasis on human rights education connected to global citizenship education. Although human rights-related courses have been growing in universities, traditional human rights education has been criticized for its predominantly legal and institutional approach, limiting learners’ ability to understand human rights issues from multiple perspectives and empathize with affected populations. Based on this critical awareness, this study aims to theoretically establish how art appreciation-based human rights education can function as an alternative educational approach in university general education. The research was conducted as a theoretical exploration centered on curriculum design, combining literature review and case analysis to analyze the expected educational effects of art appreciation-based learning on improving human rights sensitivity and advocacy capacity. The research findings suggest that exploring human rights issues within diverse sociocultural contexts through art can promote emotional empathy and ethical reflection. This study proposes that art appreciation- based human rights education represents a meaningful pedagogical approach that can transform traditional knowledge-centered methods into participatory and critical learning experiences.
