초록
The purpose of this study is to analyze the roles of the first and second languages in the process of acquiring the third language. This study studied the L3 (French) learning process of a participant whose L1 is Korean and L2 is English by using self-diary, think-aloud protocol and stimulated recall, and analyze four main types of learning process such as idea generation, grammar, vocabulary and translation. This study found that both L1 and L2 contributed to L3 acquisition, but L2 played about a 20 % higher role in it. Though the levels of contribution for L1 and L2 in categories are different, both languages were factors in all categories, except for the grammar category in which L1 had no contribution. Additionally, the learner transfers a certain aspect of L1 or L2 to L3 acquisition because of not only the similarity between source language and target language but also her perception of the degree of the distance between two. However, some uncontrolled factors such as learning environment, the participant’s proficiency of L1 and L2 and the kinds of language can make the result of this research different, which could lead to future study.
