Abstract
The characteristic of the Davidic covenant in Chronicles emphasizes the connection with the kingdom of God through the Davidic dynasty and the temple. When we connect the Davidic covenant with the perspective of the kingdom of God, it promotes expectations for the future descendant of David. In this article, after examining the characteristics of the Davidic covenant in 1 Chronicles 17, the author tells how David's monarchy and the temple are connected to the kingdom of God and how this leads to the expectation of the future Messiah. The two pillars of the Davidic covenant are the Davidic dynasty and the temple. The Chronicler emphasizes that the Davidic dynasty and the temple are connected to the kingdom of God through the Davidic covenant. When God appointed David as king, He renewed His oath-promise of the faithfulness of covenant (2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17; Psalm 89:35-37). In the history of Judah after Solomon, when dynastic continuity is threatened and finally destroyed, the silence about the covenant is very eloquent. The implication of this silence is that with the fall of the pre-exilic kingdom, the kingdom of God among his people must now take a different form in the post-exilic community. Thus, the message of Chronicles implies an openness to the future. Chronicles urges readers to embrace the rich possibilities open to God's people through the designated temple and its worship there. These possibilities basically include not only the hope for the restoration of the Davidic dynasty, but also the expectation of the future Messiah and the future worship-community. This is because the promise of both the dynasty and the temple of the Davidic covenant in Chronicles was given in the larger context of the kingdom of God.
