Abstract
Social enterprises are organizations that should balance economic performance and making social contributions. In reality, it is never easy for social enterprises to achieve their survival and dual goals, as the death valley hypothesis implies. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively identify the core factors and structure that contribute to the sustainable, balanced performance of a social enterprise. To this end, by using a case study method, this study examines Dongbu Care, a social enterprise that has been recognized for its relatively impressive and stable performance in providing elderly caretaking services. The results of the analysis show two major factors that contribute to the social enterprise’s success. First, Dongbu Care built organizational capacity required for high performance in the dimensions of marketing, operation system, external network, and service technology. And they organically combined the established capabilities with their business model. Second, Dongbu Care had a founder and CEO with exemplary social entrepreneurship who can further leverage the preceding two success factors. The results suggest that the successful performance of social enterprises is not a product of these individual factors but instead is a product of their synergy. The results also provide practical implications for new social enterprises to overcome the unavoidable obstacles related to their newness and/or smallness in a death valley.
