Abstract

The purpose of this study is to estimate the determinants of sustainabilityfor certified social enterprises in Korea using survival analysis. The majorindependent variables in the Cox regression model include the ratio of publicsubsidies, the ratio of private sector grants and the ratio of sales dependent onthe public market to total sales. These variables, all external resourcesavailable to social enterprises, could pose long-term survival risks due to pathdependency. For those enterprises confirmed to have returned theircertification, a precise time of return was determined through additionalinvestigation to set the risk function. The Cox regression model resultsindicated that while the ratio of public subsidies posed a threat to survival, theratio of private grants and the ratio of public market-driven sales appeared asopportunities, enhancing survival. This could be understood throughperspectives of accumulation of social capital.
