Abstract

This study investigates how institutional pressures shape the environmental (E) dimension of ESG strategies among major energy companies in Korea, the United States, and the European Union. Drawing on neo institutional theory and Oliver’s(1991) strategic response framework, the research analyzes sustainability reports published between 2021 and 2023 using Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA) topic modeling and Word2Vec based semantic analysis. The results show that EU firms exhibit predominantly acquiescent strategies under strong coercive and normative institutional environments, whereas U.S. companies demonstrate a mix of compromise and avoidance strategies in a market-oriented, voluntary disclosure context. Korean firms, situated in a transitional stage of ESG institutionalization, reveal a coexistence of partial compliance and symbolic responses. These findings indicate that institutional environments substantially influence firms’ strategic orientations in the environmental domain of ESG. By quantifying strategy types through text- based topic structures and linking them to institutional contexts, this study contributes to expanding the methodological and theoretical scope of institution-based ESG strategy research.
